A red-eared slider.

Check out the IDNR’s Wild About Illinois Turtles! website to learn about the pond slider.  There are three subspecies recognized in the United States, but only the red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) is found in Illinois.

The Prairie Research Institute’s Illinois Natural History Survey provides a species distribution map and more natural history information.
